Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video
This series covers the 2019-20 season of the English Premier League club "Tottenham Hotspur". Tottenham finished as runners-up in the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League losing 0-2 to fellow Premier League side Liverpool.
This 9 episode series was released in 3 parts, the first three came out on the 31st of August, the next three episodes a week later, and the last three yet another week later on the 14th of September. It starts with flashbacks of the previous year's dream run in the Champions League. Later, the focus shifts to the current season which is not the best of starts. It shows Tottenham coach "Mauricio Pochettino" attending press conferences with reporters asking him tough questions. The mood is gloomy and by the 22nd-minute into the first episode, Pochettino is sacked and is replaced by José Mourinho.
Now, José Mourinho's track record has been phenomenal, winning many trophies with the teams he has coached. Tottenham's players, fans, and the Board hope he can replicate the same here. When he takes up his position at Tottenham, it is languishing at the 14th place (in a league consisting of 20 teams) and is way away from the top 4 - which is where you need to be to qualify for the Champions League for next season.
If I were to highlight the best parts of the series, they would be the witty replies that Mourinho gives when he is asked questions by his detractors (news reporters), the way he addresses his players in the dressing room. It is also interesting to note how Daniel Levy (Chairman of Tottenham) and Mourinho deal with player injuries, their contracts, and "clearing the air" by dealing with players' concerns.
There are certain aspects where I felt the series misses out on, specifically the screen time given to Pochettino. He was at the helm for 12 Premier League games, 4 Champions League games, and the whole of the EFL cup. Well, Tottenham appeared in the EFL cup for only one game when they were knocked out of the competition by Fourth-Tier "Colchester United" on penalties. Now all of these are a considerable chunk of events that have not been given enough coverage. Another missed opportunity was the lack of attention given to fans' support towards the club. There are a couple of instances but not much that catches the attention.
On the whole, this series has its moments but is not among the best I have viewed although I must admit that the last episode (ninth) was very enthralling. You can give this series a go, but if you are not hooked onto it by the third episode you should probably stop watching it.
